This year, the Quilt Alliance contest theme is “inspired by”. The idea is to pick an inspiration quilt from The Quilt Index or the Quilters’S.O.S.- Save Our Stories (Q.S.O.S.) projects. I wasn’t going to make a quilt to donate this year because I just couldn’t connect with the theme. Making a piece based on someone else’s quilt is just not the way I work. But then I remembered seeing Jamie Fingals Metal Measures quilt hanging at the Handiquilter headquarters last year when I was out there taping an episode of the Quilt It! show. I decided to approach the “inspired by”theme from a different direction and rather than taking inspiration from the imagery and pattern I took my inspiration from the materials –specifically the use of zippers…“zippy zinnias”16″x 16″hand dyed cotton, zippers
This allowed me to stay true to my own style while at the same time staying true to the theme. The blooms are made from zippers and I used black zippers to outline the vases as well as the outer edges of the quilt.
This was the first project I made start to finish on my new BERNINA 750 QE.
I’ve dropped it into my sewing table and it fits okay but hubby will alter the table so that it will fit flush to the top surface. It’s a beautiful machine, it sews like a dream and I’m just thrilled to have it in the studio.
