Today on my blog I have a special guest post from my friend Lorri from Art Camp for Women…
Hi,Lorri Flint of Art Camp for Women here. Last weekend I had the opportunity to get away with a couple of my art girlfriends. We had three whole days to focus on art and we each brought a project to work on. We also brought good food, drink and snacks!
A few days before, the strap broke on my old gym bag. Since I use it nearly every day,I needed a replacement…pronto. I’m de-cluttering and downsizing so I looked around and spotted my “boring” white Lands End bag (sorry Lands End,but I like lots of color!). I decided to paint my bag and brought a variety of acrylic paints, brushes and GAC 100 (A Golden product I used as a base coat).
Here’s where the serendipity comes in. I had a design in mind until one of my friends,Jeanne, showed me a video of Flora Bowley and her free flowing painting style. I was smitten and my bag design had a whole new direction. This is what happens when we create side-by-side with other people. We see something we didn’t think of and instantly it gets incorporated in our art.
I was away for three full days and it actually took me the whole time to paint my bag. Besides the fact that it is the extra-large size bag,I’m not a fast painter and I thoroughly enjoyed the process – laying down layers of paint and then going back over it,the design shifting and changing as time passed.
The beauty of getting away from my home and all its distractions is that I actually stuck with it and finished painting my bag. If I had been home,I guarantee I would have become distracted or the voice in my head would have said,“You’ve spent enough time on this…now go get some house project, bill paid, dish washed, etc.” and my bag would likely be languishing in my studio,half-finished.
This is why we,at Art Camp for Women, think it’s so important to get away to create. You give yourself the gift of focused time with other like-minded women. You are free to learn, experiment, laugh and enjoy good food and drink without all the distractions of daily life! We have space left in our October Art Camp for Women and we’d love to have you join us! Don’t delay,it’s filling fast.
