the breast pocket project

Melanie Testa has organized a very exciting project called “Breast Pocket”  to raise awareness for women who have had breast cancer and make the decision to forgo reconstructive surgery.  The goal is to collect 1000 hand made breast pockets by 10/22 and so today I made 4 pockets in honor of some women I know to contribute to the goal:

I decided to make my pockets out of paper that I fused to fabric using Mistyfuse.   Fusing the paper to fabric strengthens it and makes it easier to stitch through without tearing.  The top right pocket is made from paper that I painted, screenprinted and foiled myself.  The top two pockets are made in honor of Melly, the bottom left is for a friend and the bottom right one I made to honor all those women that I don’t know who have decided against reconstructive surgery.

Each envelope has a card tucked inside with a note to the person it honors.

First I read of this project. I am one of those women who did not have reconstructive surgery. I had a bilateral mastectomy ten years ago. I knew right away I did not want reconstruction. I do not now nor have I ever regretted that decision. I will have to make a pocket and send it in. thanks as always for sharing.

  • Your breast pockets are beautiful! I like the idea of putting a little note in the pockets.

HOw wonderful. Our society is so hung up on “image”and forgets that it is what’s inside that counts.
