I have been wanting to try my hand at this binding for a while now. I've seen this called a few different names;keyhole binding, buttonhole binding, and exposed long stitch binding so I'm not sure what the actual official name for it is:
This was the first one that I made. It's a smaller journal measuring about 6"x6"x2"and I used cork paper for the outside. This next one is a bit larger at 6"x9"x2":
I used a metallic novelty thread to sew the signatures in on this one and it really glimmers against the black book cloth. If you're interested in trying this binding technique check out the free tutorial on making on over at the Cailun.info blog.
And speaking of books, check out the beautiful fabric covered hardcover padfolio that Cynthia made!

That looks great Sue –it looks like the signature can be taken out and new ones added as needed? Really nice!
Haha,it looks like keyhole binding is the new trend! I just tried this binding for the first time, and then Kiley (http://kupokiley.blogspot.com/) left me a comment that she had just tried it as well! CaiLun is a good influence on us all,I guess.
Your books turned out so well! I love that second one.
I love this kind of binding. Always looks so smart. The black and white one looks really good.
The binding certainly worked well. I especially like the metallic thread that shows your nice work.
These are very nice. Cynthia’s padfolio turned out great.
